Everyone once in his life had forgotten his computer's password, and there is no other way to again gain access to the computer without formatting it. If we forgot our windows password then windows gives us options to reset our password using a password reset disk or an administrator account could do that but what if we don't have access to the password recovery disk or the password which we have forgotten is of administrator account itself, then we are locked out? We have to format the computer to gain access. Well this is indeed a last option but there is a way to gain access to the system without the need of formatting it again. Lets see how these can be done.
Things you need for doing this: A windows setup disk Windows vista,7,8 and 10 any one can work.
- First of all what you need to do is that go to your bios setting and change the boot options so that you can boot from the installation media. For getting into bios setup there are many different ways these things vary depending upon the manufacturer but the common keys which can be pressed for getting into the setup are del, f9, f2 etc. you have to check these setting. Once you are able to change the setting for booting from CD rom then youcan go to step 2. (Note. You should be very careful while changing the BIOS setting.)
- Once you boot into the setup you will come across the screen which will allow you to choose your language options, choose next(I am using Windows 8 installation media).
-
Now the setup will prompt you what to do, it will show two options Install now and repair your computer. Click on repair your computer.
-
Then the setup will show another screen which shows you to choose from different options like to continue to boot to windows installed, Troubleshoot and turn off your pc.Select troubleshoot and continue.
-
Now go to advance options and select command prompt to open command prompt. Now we have to copy and replace one file "utilman.exe". Now the utilman.exe is present in systemroot\windows\system32. You have to check which is your windows is installed(In my case it is in c: drive). Now you have to type the following : copy c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\ and copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe now type yes and press enter. Then reboot the system and remove the installation media.
-
When the computer goes to the logon screen click the ease of access centre button. Boom you got command prompt yess, this will open command prompt because we just now replaced the ease of access centre application with command prompt in the last step. Now in the command prompt type Net User Username New Password and hit Enter. (Note. If the user name contains spaces like my user name Auroit Das then we have to include the user name in "" like Net User "Aurojit Das" xyz and hit Enter.) and you successfully changed your password.
-
Now simply login using your new password.
